Higher RO recovery looks attractive on paper because reject volume falls. In practice, every extra percentage point also concentrates salts, hardness, silica, organics, and scaling potential.
The right limit depends on feed consistency. Plants with stable equalization, disciplined dosing, and reliable pretreatment can usually operate closer to the design edge than plants with batch dumps or mixed process drains.
Operators should track normalized permeate flow, differential pressure, conductivity, and cleaning frequency. If these indicators drift after a recovery increase, the saving may be smaller than the added membrane and downtime cost.
Reject management should be planned before pushing recovery. A smaller but more concentrated reject stream may need different neutralization, storage, evaporation, or tanker logistics.
A defensible recovery target balances water reuse, membrane life, brine handling, and compliance. The goal is not maximum recovery for one week; it is stable recovery across seasons.
